The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
