Forecasters are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Go Ahead Amid Warnings

Displays Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks shows, with no rain and good visibility. The mercury are forecast to be low, making extra layers vital, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for Friday

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

  • Commuting is expected to be affected.
  • The public should to plan for delays for travel on the road.
  • Delays and cancellations are likely on public transport.

Temperatures Expected to Plummet Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Alerts Released

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this indicated the weather could to trigger notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is utterly paramount.
