A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
