Unidentified Magenta Slime on Isolated Tasmanian Coast Spurs Fears of Likely Algae Outbreak
Officials in the island state are working to identify a magenta ooze that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with some scientists anxious it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Extensive Appearance Across Shore
The magenta-hued slime was found on a stretch of a coastal area about 60km south of Hobart. A comparable ooze has also been noted on areas of Little Roaring Beach and a separate bay.
Samples Collected for Analysis
Examples have been collected and sent to the regulatory body for analysis. A representative remarked that "algal blooms are a natural event in reaction to variations in minerals, temperature, rain or sunlight".
"These blooms are at times called red or pink tides because the proliferations can change the water reddish," the official added. "Not all phytoplankton events are harmful, with numerous types acting as a key source of food for animals in the marine food web."
"The most common cause of crimson tides in local waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce glowing light shows at night."

South Australia not long ago dealt with a severe phytoplankton proliferation along its coastal region after a succession of marine heatwaves, which spread across thousands of square kilometres. A marine expert, who was involved in studying the onset of the previous event said, based on images of the current situation, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a kind of dinoflagellate also known as "ocean glitter".

The expert explained sea sparkle did not create toxins similar to the species involved in South Australia's harmful algal bloom, but it does consume microscopic animals and "numerous fish eggs", meaning marine life were in greatest danger.
"It's common to observe a bloom of the organism after a outbreak of a different species, or something like a salmon or coral spawning event," she added.
Demands for Investigation and Public Safety
A marine scientist, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in the state, stated it seemed the potential proliferation had "increased notably" and proposed the fish farming business was the most likely culprit, pointing to like situations overseas.
"Thus Tasmania needs to send a firm alert here, the government and the environmental agency need to react to this. We need to study the samples we've gathered and we need to put word out the people here," she said.
She said she had anxieties for community health after feeling a numbness along her body while being exposed with tainted seawater.

An conservation group has reported lifeless animals and expired organisms being found on the beach, with a veteran activist describing the event as an "ecological crisis" and urging the state premier to see and "lead the response that authorities must be doing".
